Installing 3M window film can help reduce your tax bill

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 provides federal tax credits to homeowners who make energy-saving improvements to their home, including installing qualifying 3M flat-glass window films. Film purchases must occur between January 1 and December 31, 2009, in order to be eligible for a tax credit on the 2009 federal tax return you submit in 2010. The tax credit is equal to 30% of the cost of the qualifying film (does not apply to labor costs), up to a maximum tax credit of $1,500. The credit is not a deduction; it comes right off the top, thus lowering your overall income tax. (NOTE: This credit is not a reduction in your payment to Protective Film Solutions; it is strictly a tax credit that will apply to your 2009 income tax that you file in 2010.)

How can you take advantage of this tax credit?
  • Fill out IRS Form 5695 (for tax year 2009)
  • Keep your receipt as proof for your return (the film should be a separate line item; labor is not covered by the credit)
  • Obtain copy of manufacturer's certification statement (which includes a list of the films that qualify in your area). Ask us to e-mail/give you this document when you've had your window film installed.
  • For more information, visit the U.S. Department of Energy website.
